Express Entry Changes 2026: Federal High-Skilled Class

Express Entry Changes 2026: What Canada’s New Federal High-Skilled Class Means for You

Canada has proposed the biggest change to Express Entry since it launched in 2015. The plan replaces three skilled worker programs with one: the Federal High-Skilled Class.

What Is the Federal High-Skilled Class?

Today, you enter the Express Entry pool through the Federal Skilled Worker Class, the Canadian Experience Class, or the Federal Skilled Trades Class. Each has its own rules. The proposal combines them into one set of rules.

Proposed Express Entry Eligibility Requirements

Reports on the proposal point to these requirements:

  • A Canadian high school credential (or equivalent)
  • Language level of CLB 6
  • One year of skilled work (TEER 0–3) within the last three years

The proposal also adds bonus points for high-wage occupations.

Where things stand today. IRCC closed its public consultation on the proposal in May 2026. Draft regulations come next, and final rules are likely in 2027. Current Express Entry rules stay in place until then, so you can keep building your profile with confidence.

How the Changes Affect Your CRS Score

Your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score decides whether you receive an invitation to apply. Language results, work experience, and job offers all move that score. Candidates who prepare now will be ready under the current system and the new one.

5 Steps to Prepare Your Canadian Permanent Resident Application

  1. Book or retake your language test to raise your scores.
  2. Gather your education and work documents.
  3. Update your Express Entry profile.
  4. Explore provincial nominee programs as a second route.
  5. Speak with a licensed immigration professional.
