Canada may give skilled workers more ways to be selected in 2027. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) asked the public which Express Entry categories should run next year, and the consultation closed on September 1, 2026.
What Is Category-Based Selection in Express Entry?
Under category-based selection, IRCC invites candidates with specific skills, language abilities or experience. This approach now accounts for a growing share of all Express Entry invitations. If your profile fits a category, you gain another way to be selected.
Four New Express Entry Categories Proposed for 2027
IRCC is considering these additions:
- Global Talent Stream occupations, including AI and cybersecurity roles
- Researchers, linked to a new national research recruitment initiative
- Candidates under the International Talent Attraction Strategy
- H-1B visa holders in the United States
Which Existing Categories Could Continue?
IRCC also asked whether the healthcare, trades, STEM, education, transport and French-language categories should continue, and whether to shorten their occupation lists. French-language proficiency produced the most invitations in 2025, and Francophone immigration targets outside Quebec keep rising.
How the 2027 Categories Connect to Your CRS Score
Categories decide which candidates IRCC invites in a draw, while your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score ranks you inside it. A strong profile helps you in both.
Where Things Stand Today
IRCC has not yet published the final 2027 list. An announcement is likely in late 2026 or early 2027. The 2026 categories continue until then, and your current profile stays valid. Canada is also reviewing a new Federal High-Skilled Class for Express Entry.
4 Ways to Prepare Your Permanent Resident Application Now
- Confirm your NOC code and job duties match your profile.
- Raise your language scores. French at NCLC 7 opens the French-language category.
- Document high-wage Canadian work experience.
- Keep provincial nominee options open as a second route.
