Canada’s New Digital Visas: What Travellers Need to Know

Canada has started testing “digital visas” as part of a broader plan to modernize its immigration system and make travel to Canada faster and more convenient. For now, it offers a clear preview of how future visas may look.

Canada Digital Visa Pilot

In November 2025, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) launched a digital visa pilot with a limited group of Moroccan citizens with approved temporary resident visas. These travellers still receive the counterfoils (stickers) in their passports. However, they are also invited to use a secure digital version of their visas for travel and verification. The goal is to test the technology and collect feedback.

Digital visas are designed to replace the passport handling that slows down current processes. They can reduce or even remove the need to mail in a passport and cut courier delays. Furthermore, they assist airlines and border officers verify information more quickly and accurately. For travellers, this can mean fewer worries about lost passports during processing and a smoother journey from check‑in to arrival.

Security and privacy are central to the pilot. IRCC is working with other federal departments to ensure that digital visas meet Canadian and international standards for data protection and secure document management. The pilot will also test how well digital credentials connect with airline systems and border technologies before any wider rollout.

At KIS Migration, we guide you confidently through IRCC’s digital transition.
