Background
As most immigrants prefer to settle in metropolitan areas (e.g. Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal), rural and northern communities struggle with economic growth. Hence, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has created a 5-year federal Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot to support Canada’s remote communities in attracting and retaining newcomers.

Communities will be selected based on a set of criteria, including the ability to support and integrate new immigrants.

The new pilot is intended to complement the Atlantic Immigration Pilot and the Provincial Nominee Program while furthering francophone communities outside Quebec.
IRCC extended the deadline for communities to apply to March 11, 2019.
